BT pensions gulf widens Record low gilt yields have sparked fresh concerns over BT's pensions shortfall, which analysts say has jumped to more than 12bn as the decision to leave the EU hits the retirement schemes of UK cost of kate spade bags companies. Analysts at investment bank Macquarie believe the telecoms giant's pension deficit may have widened by as much as 1.6bn to 12.2bn, in the space of just a few weeks, largely as a result of Brexit. Investors fear that the BT's cherished dividend payments could be sacrificed to meet the shortfall, with Macquarie estimating BT could halve its current growth rate of 10pc. Interest rates took a dramatic plunge last week, as Government kate spade 70 off sale bond yields fell to record lows. The 10 year Treasury kate spade ladies handbags yield dropped below 1pc for the first time in history, prompting alarm over BT's own 40bn pension fund, which is the largest private pension in the UK. "Pension scheme deficits have soared again to record levels," said Charles Cowling, a director at JLT, which administers pensions on behalf of companies. "It will be difficult for trustees and companies to hedge interest rates at current levels." Big businesses are already struggling to plug pensions shortfalls after decades of declining interest rates, of which BT's 300,000 member scheme. Across the FTSE 100, companies face a total 117bn deficit across their defined benefit pension schemes, a 56pc jump from last year, according to JLT Employee Benefits. Shares kate spade purse cost in BT have plunged 7pc following the referendum vote, wiping 3bn from the telecoms giant's market value, as investors reacted badly to Brexit. BT stock currently trades at 4.09, giving it a market value of 40.7bn. BT, which relies on the UK for around two thirds of its revenues, across its broadband, pay TV and phone services, insists it is "business as usual" despite campaigning to remain in the European Union ahead of the vote. "We'll work closely with the British Government and EU during negotiations to ensure BT's views are heard," a spokesman said. "Our goal is to protect the interests of our customers, employees, shareholders and business." The telecoms giant has long struggled to plug its growing multi billion pound pensions gulf, which in 2014 stood at 7bn. BT would need to increase its deficit payments to 1bn a year until 2030 to plug the new deficit, Macquarie's research claims. According to BT's pension trustees, the company paid 880m towards the deficit in the last financial year, up from 876m in the year to March 31. Guy Peddy at Macquarie said: "If recent bond movements were reflected in lower future expectations of real returns, the pension deficit could have increased to at least 12.

2bn." He added that Brexit is unlikely to hit revenues at BT, which has a subscription based business model and is in a strong position after successfully buying mobile network EE for 12.5bn signalling its re entry into the mobile market after more than a decade of absence.
